February Fun

It was another short week at ICSJ with a snow day Monday! I hope you stayed safe and warm.  Read on for our art room activities this week.

***Special thanks to Mrs. Jacobson, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Bennett for volunteering in our art room this week!  It is always such a treat to have you with us.***

Kindergarten

Kindergarten followed steps to creating a penguin using crayon, scissors and glue to paste on top of the backgrounds they created last week!  Students demonstrated incredible fine motor skills, not to mention concentration and hard work, in using these tools to create charming and unique penguins.  Students also selected pom poms and scraps of felt or gauze to cut and paste hats, gloves, scarves and even sweaters to their penguins!  Finally, they applied snowflakes in white paint. Great job, Kindergarten!

First Grade

Having painted sunset backgrounds last week, first grade learned about landscapes. Then, students tore paper to create the foreground of their landscapes, and they used cardboard squares to stamp the Indian Paintbrush flowers all across their artworks!

Second Grade

Second grade learned about Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky this week and emulated his concentric circle painting to create pieces of a collaborative artwork.  Check back soon to see the completed artwork assembled together in this abstract expressionistic style.

Third Grade and Fourth Grade

Third and fourth grades did not meet because of the snow day!  We look forward to seeing you next week for our Odyssey through the Arts presentations.

Fifth Grade

Fifth graders participated in a fun, guided coloring activity in warm and cool colors as students were pulled in small groups to fix their baskets to their hot air balloons. Take a look at some of our balloons completed so far!

Sixth Grade

Sixth grade students set their 3-D hand symbol sculptures for display in the library -- be sure to check it out!  Students wrote paragraphs or poems explaining their ideas, and the results are both thought-provoking and inspiring!  Then, students began a painting project related to their Greek gods and goddesses research project in Language Arts!

Seventh Grade

Seventh grade participated in a final day of painting and drawing on their Variety Seascapes.  Early finishers added more details to their tessellations or helped with tasks around the art room.  Students also helped paint our collaborative Starry Night over Chicago project or engaged in "free draw."

Eighth Grade

Eighth grade students concluded their negative space nature silhouette painting in watercolor.  Check back soon for photos of both these and 7th grade Variety Seascapes.

Next week, we will begin our Odyssey through the Arts presentation of Mid Century Chicago Architecture, thanks to the hard work and collaboration of our Arts Committee.  Thank you to the many parents dedicated to enriching our students' art education, with a special focus toward skills of observation and the language of the arts.

Have a great weekend!
