March: In Like a Lion

March has come in like a lion with cold winter temperatures, but that means that it should end like a lamb! Students worked hard on Terra Novas this week, and so many specials classes, including art, were canceled for testing.  Read below for updates on classes that did meet this week!

*Thank you Mrs. Russell for volunteering in the art room this week!*

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students learned about German Expressionist Paul Klee, who painted a Cubist-style cat in mostly warm colors.  Students drew inspiration from this in class before painting the charming cat portraits below!

First Grade

First grade did not meet for Terra Novas.

Second Grade

Second grade concluded their lesson in emphasis with their oil pastel sunflowers!  Students enjoyed a reading from Mrs. Russell about Van Gogh's life as a young child.  They continued to practice blending and layering in this lesson.

Third Grade

Third grade learned about the Expressionist movement and drew lines and shapes in oil pastel to express their feelings.  Then, they chose colors that also represented their feelings and began to paint! Next week, we will complete our paintings and put on finishing touches, including defining lines in black and black construction paper backings.  Check back to see our finished work!

Fourth Grade

Fourth Grade did not meet for Terra Novas.

Fifth Grade

Fifth grade students learned the process they will be using to create their profile portraits in silhouette.  Students put down the first layer of paint, choosing different colors and application techniques.  Next week, students will cut out their photographs in profile for use as a stencil in the next step.  Be sure to look back to see the finished artwork and the many different approaches that students took.

Sixth Grade

Having concluded their Greek vase paintings, students were ready to begin the brainstorming and sketching steps of their new Mixed Media Self Portrait assignment.  Students were encouraged to use their creativity to imagine unique settings, words, colors, and collage materials to be added to their portrait.  See Greek vase paintings and radial design plates from last week!

Seventh Grade

Seventh graders learned about artist Chuck Close, and how he used grids to break up faces to help him remember them.  Chuck Close overcame great challenges in his life to achieve his success.  Students used photographs to define and trace lines in their faces before drawing a 1-in. X 1-in. grid on top.  Students will draw different designs in each square and color using colored pencils starting next week!

Eighth Grade

Eighth Grade did not meet for Terra Novas.

Enjoy the warmer forecasted weather and be sure to set your clock forward for Daylight Savings!  See you on Monday!
