Celebrating Odyssey Through the Arts: Documentary Photography

This week, students in art studied Documentary Photography with Odyssey Through the Arts.  The collection of photographs chosen provided ample material for thoughtful discussion.  I am impressed at the maturity and consideration of students in all grades!  Great job, students!

Kindergarten

Students in Kindergarten, after participating in discussion (pictured below), drew their own ideas for documentary photographs in an imaginary newspaper.  Many went on to add stories and details!  One popular topic was the recent birth of a new baby animal at Lincoln Park Zoo!  Way to go, Kindergarten.

For kindergarten students who did not have their Odyssey discussion this week, we enjoyed a reading of Leonardo's Horse, a book that taught us about Leonardo da Vinci's curiosity about the world.  We also learned about fellow Italian Renaissance painter Michelangelo, and how he painted the Sistine Chapel upside down!  We tried putting ourselves in Michelangelo's shoes, "painting" under our desks in crayon!

We learned there could be frustrations in the process, with the texture underneath the desks rubbing onto our drawings.  Our students approached this with a positive attitude.  For example, the kindergarten friend below used this to her advantage!  What great creativity and adaptability!

First Grade

For first grade students who did not meet for Odyssey through Arts this week (postponed until next week), we learned about the regionalism of artist Grant Wood, who is especially relevant to us here in the Midwest!  We first observed Grand Wood landscapes, with his rolling hills, many colors and textures.  Students created their own using pattern.  Some students even tried applying more pressure around the edges of a hill and less pressure on the inside to create a 3-dimensional effect.

Eighth Grade

Eighth Grade students learned about their upcoming research project in careers in the art.  This project will incorporate Language Arts skills of speaking and listening as they interview a real artist in their field of interest!

We look forward to upcoming activities of our school art show and the May crowning of Mary!  Have a wonderful weekend.
